Elementary Science Lab Night

Building on the success of the previous year, the 2025–2026 Elementary Science Lab Night welcomed an even larger cohort of local students to the Center Grove Innovation Center. Organized by the Science National Honor Society (SNHS), the expanded evening featured an increased overall variety of student-run stations and interactive experiments—such as fingerprint forensics, bottle cap rockets, and oil-water lava lamps—alongside a broader selection of engineering-focused challenges.

The story

More than an event — a chance to put science into practice.

An expanded hands-on STEM outreach night hosted by SNHS, bringing in more students and an increased variety of overall activities, including fingerprinting, bottle cap rockets, oil-water lava lamps, and engineering-themed stations.

Why we did it

To expand community reach and spark early curiosity and enthusiasm for science and engineering among a larger group of elementary students through accessible, hands-on learning while empowering SNHS members through leadership and outreach.

What participants did

Enjoy a variety of station activities led by CGHS Science National Honor Society members, where students can rotate through hands-on experiments and interactive challenges. Each station features a different science topic—encouraging curiosity, problem-solving, and discovery in a fun, engaging way designed for elementary students.

Chemistry and Physics

Water Bottle Lava Lamp

Students mixed oil, water, and food coloring, observed changes in the water bottle, and were able to bring home their own lava lamp.

Forensic Science

Fingerprinting on balloons

Members helped students to make fingerprints on balloons and taught them about types of patterns on fingers and such.

Density and prediction

Density towers

Participants predicted how liquids and objects would layer, then compared the results with their ideas.

Design and iteration

Engineering challenges

Short building challenges encouraged students to test a plan, notice failure points, and improve it.

Lessons to carry forward

  • The clearest explanations begin with a question, not a lecture.
